HORTUS
MOVEABLE INDOOR HERB GARDEN

Objective
To design a herb garden for a three generational family to be used within their home kitchen. The product should be inclusive and intuitive for all to use, allowing members to partake with the preparation and cooking of meals. Through its use it should create an environment which gives independence to the less able in the family and increase the social contact between the family members. The product will also bring the outdoors in, allowing the members to connect with nature during the winter months when going outside can be less accessible.
Rationale
The number of multigenerational households in the United Kingdom are increasing. Amongst the multiple reasons for families adopting this household type is the need to support their elderly relatives. This increase in social contact in mid – later life can mitigate the risks associated with loneliness and lower the chance of developing dementia. Studies undertaken by the social care institute for excellence have made positive links between dementia sufferers well being and the outdoor environment, indicating that nature can bring ‘better mood, memory, communication’ and improved concentration to those suffering.
