SELF ASSEMBLE MDF LAMPSHADE

Objective

To design a 3D lampshade, manufactured from 3mm thick MDF Board using only the Laser cutter as machinery. The components will be designed to enable an easy, glue-free assembly process by the user after it is delivered. This will be achieved by designing a novel and universal fitting which will feature throughout the design. The aesthetics of the product will be influenced existing Tiffany Studio lampshades produce during the Art Nouveau movement. The product will be a unique form, consisting of a component capable of 360° taking inspiration from a ball and socket joint.

Rationale

According to the market research company Mintel, the amount of money spent by consumers on home accessories grew for a fifth consecutive year. These decorative-trend driven products are more commonly bought by younger renters who are wanting to personalise their home with affordable products which can be easily removed if they move (Mintel, 2020). MDF is manufactured from wood which would have been discarded. This waste reducing material can fulfil the environment concerns consumers face when purchase homeware.
